Adult Basics 1 through 15

This sheet is a guide for students currently studying with New Paltz Karate Academy or associated schools or programs. We also have a DVD illustrating the Isshinryu basics, as well as Pinan 1 & 2.  If you have any questions, please speak to your instructor. ☺

 

Adult Basics #1-15*

All basics are done on the right and left side.  These examples all step with the right foot, but should be done stepping left as well and using the corresponding hand. Each basic begins & ends in Heikodachi, and incorporates a kiai on the final strike before stepping back into ready position.

#1 Step forward with your right foot, straight forward punch with the right (same side) hand.

Finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

#2 Step forward with your right foot, uppercut with the right (same side) hand.

Finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

#3 Step forward with your right foot, straight forward punch with the left (opposite side) hand.

Finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

#4 Step forward with your right foot, uppercut with the left (opposite side) hand.

Finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

#5 Step back with your right foot, bring the left hand over to the right hip (“Catch to the back leg”), lower block with the left hand, straight forward punch with the right hand while simultaneously pulling the block in.

Finish by stepping forward into heikodachi.

#6 Step back with your right foot, bring the left hand over to the right hip (“Catch to the back leg”), middle block with the left hand, straight forward punch with the right hand while simultaneously pulling the block in.

Finish by stepping forward into heikodachi.

#7 Step back with your right foot, bring the left hand over to the right hip (“Catch to the back leg”), open-hand middle block with the left hand, nukite thrust (spear hand) with the right hand while simultaneously pulling the block in.

Finish by stepping forward into heikodachi.

#8 Step back with your right foot, bring the left hand over to the right hip (“Catch to the back leg”), open-hand middle block with the left hand, uppercut with the right hand while simultaneously pulling the block in.

Finish by stepping forward into heikodachi.

#9 Step back with your right foot, bring the left hand over to the right hip (“Catch to the back leg”), overhead block with the left hand, straight forward punch with the right hand while simultaneously pulling the block in.

Finish by stepping forward into heikodachi.

#10 Step forward with your right foot, raise your right arm with the elbow bent so that your bicep is next to your ear. Backfist with the right hand, straight forward punch with the left hand while simultaneously pulling the backfist in.

Finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

#11 Step forward with your right foot, with the right hand catch to the left hip (“Catch to the back leg”), lower block with the right hand, and do five straight forward punches using both hands in an alternating pattern (start & finish the punches on the left side).

Finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

#12 Step forward with your right foot, with the right hand catch to the left hip (“Catch to the back leg”), middle block with the right hand, and do five straight forward punches using both hands in an alternating pattern (start & finish the punches on the left side).

Finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

#13 Step forward with your right foot and extend and drop your left fist out to the side at about hip-level, knuckle-side out. Swivel your hips and let the left fist swing in and strike at kidney height (“mawashi tzuki”). Extend and drop the right fist out to the side at about hip-level. Swivel your hips and let the right fist swing in and strike at about jaw height.

Finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

#14 Step forward with your right foot, bring the right hand to your left shoulder with the palm up (“Catch to the right shoulder”), right hand shuto forward (“Chop out palm down”), two hands pull back, left hand shuto down (“Chop down”).

Finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

#15 Look back over your right shoulder. Step back on the right side into “t-stance” or “cat stance”. Extend both arms in front of you and cross them with the right arm on the bottom and the left arm on top. Elbow-strike backwards with the right arm.

Finish by stepping forward into heikodachi.

 

Helpful hints:

If you step forward to start the basic, finish by stepping backwards into heikodachi.

If you step backwards to start the basic, finishing by stepping forwards into heikodachi.

Always kiai on the final strike!

Basics 1-4 step forward. Then all basics step backwards until number 10. #’s 10-14 step forward again, and then we finish by stepping back on # 15.
