Junior Basics 1 through 8

This sheet is a guide for students currently studying with New Paltz Karate Academy or associated schools or programs. We also have a Children’s Basics and Pinan DVD available. If you have any questions, please speak to your instructor. ☺
Junior Basics*
All basics are done on the right and left side. These examples all step with the right foot, but should be done stepping left as well.
#1 Step forward with your right foot, straight forward punch with the right (same side) hand.
#2 Step forward with your right foot, uppercut with the right (same side) hand.
#3 Step forward with your right foot, straight forward punch with the left (opposite side) hand.
#4 Step forward with your right foot, uppercut with the left (opposite side) hand.
#5 Step back with your right foot, bring the left hand over to the right hip (“Catch to the back leg”), lower block with the left hand, straight forward punch with the right hand.
#6 Step back with your right foot, bring the left hand over to the right hip (“Catch to the back leg”), middle block with the left hand, straight forward punch with the right hand.
#7 Step forward with your right foot, bring the right hand to your left shoulder with the palm up (“Catch to the back shoulder”), right hand shuto forward (“Chop out palm down”), two hands pull back, left hand shuto down (“Chop down”).
#8 Look behind you over your right shoulder, step back with your right foot, elbow strike with your right hand.
Fun Facts: Mr. Jenkins took the 15 Isshinryu basics and simplified them to make up the junior basics for kids. Junior basics aren’t normally part of Isshinryu – only the schools that descended from Mr. Jenkins teach them.
